Cancelled flight, replacement flight a day early, is compensation due

Two years ago my daughter and family had their holiday flight to Faro cancelled when EasyJet didn’t have enough crew (at the time it was a big problem as flights ramped up after covid). It was cancelled just a couple of days before the flight was due.
They were offered a day early or a day late or a refund. They chose a day early. This did mean quite a bit of extra costs but thought that the automatic level of compensation for the cancellation would cover it.
They put in a claim but have been refused. So they left uk 10 hours early and arrived in Portugal 10hours early. I think compensation is due but the wording for ‘earlier flight’ is a bit confusing.
Does anyone have any views? Thank you for reading.
