Q1 - why?

Because the old pipe is looking pretty manky. And it's probably cheaper to fit a new pipe than to properly de-rust and repaint the old one.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Would not be hard to get that paint off with the right hot air gun or blowtorch, although I would take precautions to protect yourself from fumes.Play with the expectation of winning not the fear of failure. S.Clarke0

that is a cast iron pipe, The rust is superficial and does not need to be taken back to bare metal. Just use the correct paint, the pipe appears to be firmly attached top the wall still, so leave as is.Ectophile said:ThisIsWeird said:Q1 - why?

It will considerably cheaper than replacing all of that pipework, or do you intend to DIY?
Black Bitumen Paint readily available from even the DIY chain stores, let alone builders merchants. Intended for use on rusty cast iron., remove any flaky bits of existing paint with quick rub with sandpaper and then paint straight over the whole lot.5 -
Thanks for the replies.
Yes, it's pretty manky, rusted throughout. I don't know any diy but it's quite old. If the cost is afforable for me, I rather replace it. That's why I was wondering what will be the average cost to replace it. I've made some equiries but no reply yet.0 -
Does the pipe disappear into concrete, tarmac, block paving or does it simply discharge into a gully. It looks to be just the bath and basin waste so may not be such a big job. Photo of the bottom end would help.

Plus possibly also the cost of a ladder to reach the top of the pipe, assumingjonnydeppiwish! said:£20 for the paint or £300 for someone to replace it?This is a MSE forum after all 😉
(a) the OP is physically able to go up the ladder, and
(b) isn't afraid of heights.0 -
I have been quoted £500 to remove and replace a cast iron soil stack with plastic if that helps.I don’t know if that is an average price or not though.1

If I decided to repaint it, do I require a certain type of sandpaper? As I mentioned, I don't know any diy 😅
Thanks.0
