I have a friend in London who forwarded me this link from John.
I had left money at Abbey National Baker street in London in 1976.
At the time I had my motgage with me to buy a flat which I sold.
I would like my money back
I live in France but I plan to come to London soon.
Can you help me?
Merci de votre retour
Yours sincerely

so you had a savings account with Abbey National in 1976?

Abbey National is now part of Santander so you would need to contact them with the account details

Do you mean you had/have an account with them?  How much money?  Do you know the details of the account?  In all likelihood the account has been made dormant.  It was taken over by Santander so contact them with the details you have.  No need to be in the OK- just email them.

    https://www.mylostaccount.org.uk/ might be of interest.
Or as above, make contact with Santander in the first instance.

Not sure why this is in Techie Stuff.

The legislation around dormant bank accounts has changed a number of times since 1976. Most recently in 2008 and 2022.

Back in 1976, it was practice for an unused account to be suspended and the funds in it kept for a period of time (which varied depending on the bank/building society) during which the account holder could claim their funds. After that period the account was considered closed and emptied. For an account last used in 1976, it’s almost certain the account was closed decades ago.

What would happen if you contacted Santander? There have been previous threads on MSE where no records were found of 20 year old accounts and the FOS found in Santander’s favour.

Nothing to be lost by asking though.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
