    I suspect it's two different behaviours. From observing mine, vertical scratching is both forelegs up and down at the same time. Horizontal scratching is one paw at a time. Not sure if that movement is out of necessity from the geometry or enabled by it.

    One cat (sadly passed and missed) tended to scratch vertically and the other always goes for the carpet and showed no interest in the scratching post, walls and gateposts that the other did.
