The red number is pretty obvious, the number of notifications you have received.

You can think of notifications as highlights of things the app think is important to you. For example when very close friends post or a group you visit regularly.

Or, perhaps FB replying when you report a 'fraudulent/scam/weight loss/money making' post by saying "we really appreciate your comments but we see nothing wrong with this"
