Easyjet Flight Cancellation

Just received an email from Easyjet that my flight has been cancelled. There are no return flights until two days later.Having spoken to Easyjet chat support we were advised that we coould go ahead and book new flights with another 'economy' provider and claim back the costs (which are almost £300 more than we paid for our original flights. Just want to double check do I claim for an refund from Easyjet for the original cancelled flights and then also the additional £300 spent on tickets and am I entitled to any other compensation? Thank you!

You'd be entitled to compensation unless the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control.

In terms of the replacement flight, they're obliged to fund it, either in its entirety or by refunding the original cost plus the difference, i.e. the same total figure either way round.

No, that would be double-dipping. You can claim the difference in the airfare for the replacement flights. Not a refund on the original flights AND the cost of the new flights.

As eskbanker says, compensation may also be due if this is a short notice change.

The above assuming you are travelling within the next 14 days.

Thank you for your advice. We are travelling in more than 14 days on a later flight. Originally we were due to travel between 6-8am and now we will be travelling between 11am-1pm so as I understand it I can only claim back the cost of the new flights or could I also claim lunch expenses as we are now leaving later? Just deciding to submit my claim form today or wait until I'm back and claim flight and food expenses?

I neglected to clarify the 14 day window in my earlier post but were you notified of the cancellation within 14 days of the original flight, i.e. was it the change that took you over 14 days?  If not, then no compensation applies, regardless of cause.

My understanding is that the regulatory provision for meals relates to those needed while waiting due to short notice delays or cancellations, i.e. as a result of being at the airport too early, so I don't believe that arranging later flights two weeks out triggers that, but to be fair I think that's more about the spirit of the law rather than the letter, as this doesn't seem to be spelt out.  I'd be surprised if the airline coughed up for lunch but no harm trying I suppose....

Definitely no right to claim for lunch.   The duty of care element is intended for those delayed at the airport.  Don't milk it.
