All in one printer- which one?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a printer & was looking at the HP Deskjet F4180 @ £50 & HP Deskjet F2180 @ £30, both in PC World today.

The problem is I know nothing about them. I'm looking for something which won't cost me a fortune when replacing the inks.

Also, a scanner & copier would be a bonus hence the reason I was looking at the above printers.

The above 2 have the ability to print pics too but when I look online at the ink cost there seems to be 3 types, a black (HP21), a tricolour (HP22) & a photo ink (HP58) - would I need all 3 if I wanted to print pics?

Also, the size of the cartridges, are they all 5mls? I was trying to cross check prices but some state 5ml & some don't mention the size.

Thanks in advance.

I just bought an Epson DX8450 from PC World (£60 down from £90) - it has 4 ink cartridges.

I bought a 4450 around 6 months ago (think the 8450 is the same engine with an LCD screen and card slots) - works well and a decent software package (also handles digital cameras).

My HP all in one is crap. It permanantly says paper jam even when no paper in it and ink was exspensive. am jsut going to buy a new one myself, think im going for an epson!
  • Paying £50 for a printer and then finding you have to pay 50-100% of that for each set of ink cartridges is utter folly.

You typically want to buy either EPSON or CANON ink jet printers as compatible cartridges for these are generally available at knockdown prices - eg I've paid between 70p and £1.99 for my cartridges over the last 3 years for my el-cheapo Epson C46.

Friends in Italy has a very fancy CANON multifunction that set them back 150 quid+ but that too gets fed with £1-2 cartridges and produces glorious results.

HOWEVER do check the Epson/Canon compatible cartridges ARE actually available for the SPECIFIC model you have your eyes on.

I paid £40 for my printer and have to pay 2-5% of that for each refill and hence WILL buy Epson again. SO they get SOME payback from the sale of their hardware.

Staples stores have various Epson multifunctions at the moment if you want a retailpark/warehouse/collect deal but CHECK the cartridges ARE available cheaply!

I was looking at this in argos tonight although they didn't have stock.
So you only need 1 of the colour cartridges, well that's good to know - clears that up.

I need to decide what I want, I got a free Dell 720 (Lexmark) but the trial ran out & the refills prices are shocking.

    Cheers

When I worked in my old job they gave me an HP laserjet 3200. Its aprinter, scanner, copier, and fax machine. Its black and white and a laser jet.

I print a lot of stuff and I think I changed the cartridge twice a year.
The thing was brilliant - bulletproof - never let me down and the same can be said for my colleagues.

I was so impressed that when I left and returned the printer I bought and HP all in one inkjet (F4180 I think).

It was awful - paper was always jamming or claiming it was jammed and printer cartirdges needed changing every other week.

I spent ages looking for a 3200 on ebay. Missed out on a couple but finally got one for £16 (although expect to pay up to £80). If you dont need colour then I would reccomend this every time.

Yes we had a few of the HP one at work over the last few years and ours were ALL crud - not a good one among them. You can buy better separates which last longer then HP 3 in 1's
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
