Do you have any details of the previous owner who sold it to the dealer? It might be worth trying to get in touch and ask if there was a previous repair done.

(I did this for a car I once owned to prove that a dealer was aware of a problem as they were trying to fob me off).

Is the paperwork in the SECOND dealer's name? Did you pay the second dealer directly? Or is everything in the FIRST dealer's name and the second dealer were just an intermediary?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I would take it back to selling dealer. As it's a camper van, then you can make a trip of it & stay overnight 😍
Hmm, the dealer we paid money to insists there was nothing wrong when he sold it to us and the dealer who was selling it through him hasn't replied. Not sure which dealer we should be approaching: the one who was selling the van and sent it through to his mate for our convenience or the mate who dealt with the sale on behalf of his friend.

We didn't deal with the original dealer other than to express an interest in the van, and the second dealer isn't very interested because as he told us, it's not his van and he didn't make anything on it.
Which company is on the invoice or contract? Thats the one you need to be dealing with.
It's the second company, the one who knew very little about the van because he doesn't sell that make, the one who was very reluctant to fix some minor problems which we did ourselves in the end as we'd either waited so long or their repairs had failed or were non-existent and he wouldn't allow his technician to come to us to fix them, the one who says there was nothing wrong with it when he sold it to us and who has sent us back to the original dealer who hasn't answered my email - yet.

I'll never be caught between two dealers like this again. Neither of them seems to think the vehicle is their responsibility.

Thanks. All the paperwork is with the second dealer but I've emailed the first dealer to ask if they know of any previous damage. We also think it might have been a hire vehicle as there were No Smoking signs inside and as the first dealer hires out motorhomes it might just have been one of theirs, in which case they should know all about it.

They can't avoid your consumer rights just because "They Don't Sell That Make" sending repair guy to you I can understand, if your bought it at their premises.

Your rights are with the 2nd dealer if the paperwork is in their name. It would then be up to them to chase 1st person.

But this all sounds strange. There is a lot going around at the moment of caravan/motorhome dealers shutting down or going bust.
Wonder if 1st had seen the writing on the wall for their business & off loaded some via other dealers to keep money out of business that was failing.

The repair issue I mentioned was a rear light which we noticed didn't work when they reversed the van on their forecourt on the day we collected it. The technician tried to fix it on the spot but couldn't, and promised to come to us to sort it when he had the part. After two months I gave up waiting and bought a replacement light myself from eBay and we fixed it ourselves.

Dealer number 1 wasn't in financial difficulties. They sent the van to dealer 2 for our convenience as it was only 2 hours for us to travel instead of 4. The two businesses have a working relationship where they will do favours for each other.

Dealer 1 has just replied (they are still very much in business) to say they have no record of any repair work being done on our vehicle. So there's no evidence of this suspected earlier repair. We will just have to bear the cost.
