We bought a second hand motorhome from a dealer in December. Recently a long crack has appeared along the outside of the habitation wall. We are not aware of any damage occurring since we bought it. Two experts have said that it looks like an old repair which has gone wrong. The repair estimate is over £1000. The dealer says the problem wasn't there when they sold it to us. Do I have a case to argue?

If it's an old repair gone wrong, and you didn't spot it when inspecting the vehicle, it's entirely possible the dealer wasn't aware of if either.

I agree with that, but in the legal sense it doesn't matter.

They didn't and neither did we. The long crack has appeared recently. It's about 30cm long but the 2cm at one end show signs of having been touched up at some point so the theory is that there was some initial damage there which has spread.

Sorry didn't make myself clear, how old does the experts think the repair is?
You will need to show repair predates purchase

I can't prove that it wasn't repaired within the past 7 months.

It's complicated by the fact that the original dealer who was selling the van offered to send it across to another dealer friend to save us travelling as far to see it. We dealt with the second dealer (different company) but he was only doing a favour for his friend and didn't know the van or appear very interested in dealing with any issues once the transaction was over. He has told me that there was nothing wrong with it when he sold it to us and I should ask the first dealer about this issue.

I would take it back to selling dealer. As it's a camper van, then you can make a trip of it & stay overnight 😍

Hmm, the dealer we paid money to insists there was nothing wrong when he sold it to us and the dealer who was selling it through him hasn't replied. Not sure which dealer we should be approaching: the one who was selling the van and sent it through to his mate for our convenience or the mate who dealt with the sale on behalf of his friend.

We didn't deal with the original dealer other than to express an interest in the van, and the second dealer isn't very interested because as he told us, it's not his van and he didn't make anything on it.

Which company is on the invoice or contract? Thats the one you need to be dealing with.
