Sorry - I should have said at least two pairs, or as many as you can afford.  I suspect the OP might not want the extra expense...)

(I could probably open a running shoe shop myself.  Problem is buying more shoes doesn't make you run faster for somereason   )
I agree - it is necessary to keep multiple pairs of running shoes "on the go" to allow proper airing, recovery of the sole and to cater for those unusual days in this country when the shoes get wet in use and need to dry out.  I tend to have an older pair for training runs, a pair for the treadmill and a pair for events.

As for new shoes making you run faster - I was sent a marketing email by a brand of running shoes a fortnight ahead of the London Marathon with a "PB guarantee".  I have no idea how such a guarantee can be proven or claimed against.  I did read the small print a bit and it said it had to be marathon distance in a proper event and you had to have a previous time set at a proper event.  The shoes were £300-odd so, maybe they just know that if you spend that much on running shoes, you are pretty serious and you are quite likely to gain a PB with or without the shoes.

Ha!  She's a sculler.  I think she's spent far more on her boat in half a dozen years than I've spent on running shoes in nearly 50 years of running. So I don't think she'll be chasing me about my expenditure...

(Actually I may have lied about shoes not making you quicker.  I bought the first version of the Asics Glideride a few years ago and I think they did make me run quicker.)
