I have just heard from my Email provider that I will lose the benefits of free email - so, basically, I have decided to get my own domain. Rather than gmail.....
I have no idea how this is done - but I don't need any web space - just 2 email addresses
eg) Mouldy@olddough.com and MrsMouldy@olddough.com or similar
it needs to be secure (antivirus) and filterable as well as useable on Outlook and Android
How do I get this and what is it going to cost me ?

I registered a domain name such as mouldyolddough.co.uk and can have up to five email addresses such as fred@mouldyolddough.co.uk and freda@mouldyolddough.co.uk (assuming that name is not already taken) and get 1GB of mail space on the hosting companies server included. Obviously I could pay for more but instead archive older emails by copying them to a extra folders I have set up on free account such as gmail every couple of months.
Plenty of hosting companies such as YNH (Your name here) or free parking etc0 -

I used to use a great company a several years ago called CSNM but they got bought, then that company got bought and just recently they've been bought also and each time it was a real pain having to migrate to the new servers, passwords etc (we've many mailboxes not just 2).
I've bitten the bullet recently and now use ExchangeOnline which is £4/user/month (though you seem to be able to get away with unlicensed users) in the hope of more stability. This allows you to use the email client of your choice but also Outlook.com if you prefer a web client.
A google still shows some offering free hosting including email but you may find they disappear after a time like many others so it depends if you are happy migrating periodically to save money or pay up front for a better service.0 -
I registered a '.uk' domain with Ionos several years ago, it comes with free webmail with 2GB of email storage as standard.
(I've had that expanded to 12GB since, but it was a free offer and I don't pay any more for it).
Unless you recieve/send a lot of emails then 2GB should be enough, I've got several hundred emails stored on there and am using just 504MB at the moment.I'm currently paying £11 (inc VAT) a year for my 'myname.uk'.I don't need a website or any of their other products, just the email. The are currently offering many domains (with webmail included) for £1 for the first year, but check the ongoing cost after that.
To start put the domain name you are thinking of registering into the box here to see if it is available:
https://www.ionos.co.uk/domains/uk-domain
It will tell you if it's available, and what the first year and ongoing cost wil be, eg. mouldyolddough.uk is currently available and would be £1 and then £10 ongoing (plus VAT which is why I currently pay £11 for mine).
.co.uk would be the same, but '.com' would be £1 and then £15).Most of the other domain providers/hosting services have a similar search function to get you started on finding your domain.PS. at those kinds prices both you and MrsMouldy could have your own seperate domains.

As described there are plenty of ways to do this, but for at least the last 20 years I have owned MYFULLNAME.COM.
I pay about £10 per year for this and I forward anything sent to this to my gmail account.
The best part is that you can put anything you like before the @ in the e-mail address and it will still come to me.
This means that you can have a different e-mail address for every company you register with such as MSE@MYFULLNAME.COM or AMAZON@MYFULLNAME.COM.
Not only is this more secure, it also lets you see who leaked / sold your details to marketing companies and scammers by checking the address they sent it to!• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

(Things like Facebook@, Paypal@, and so on).

I have had a hotmail.com e-mail address for close on 30 years and various other gmail accounts. Never felt the need to have a domain (I own one or two).

Secondly can you do what the OP wants and have emails to MrsOP going to one mailbox and those to OP or anything other than MrsOP to the other mailbox?0 -

I can redirect emails to different gmail accounts without any issue. I also set up outgoing options in Gmail where I can select the outgoing email address as whatever I want from the owned domain as well for multiple on mine and as the redirect for the others.
So if I redirected wife@mydomain.com to wife@gmail.com any email sent from that gmail account will have a sender address of wife@mydomain.com rather than wife@gmail.com.
Form my account the default sender from gmail would be me@mydomain.com, but I also have a select number alternatives configured I can select. You used to be able to just use send as incoming but they removed that years ago.0 -

The only time anyone actually checked my address was when I had to call amazon customer support which I did using my web g-mail account and they said they could only respond to the e-mail address they had on file. So I just asked them to send an e-mail to my "amazon@myfullname.com" address and I would reply back to prove it was me. I did and they were then quite happy with this.
And for the second point, yes, you can set an alias (i think my domain provider allows 25, where you can list MrsOP@ and then state a different e-mail address which this will be sent to. but there is also a "catch-all" e-mail address at the bottom that all unaliased (or mis-spelt) e-mail addresses will be sent to.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
