Thank you for all the replies. I have said no, and they are fine about it. They will put it by their door. If I wanted one, my lay out is slightly different and there is more room by my garage.
My main concern was, as was pointed out by the surveyor, a concern over easements, in any future sale.

I did speak to my insurance company as I needed to ring them anyway, and they said it wouldn’t be a problem. I would be covered.

Are you saying the charger is basically on their driveway, but bolted onto your wall, because your wall is the boundary?

I'd encourage them to put it somewhere else if there was space, or on a post, but ultimately it doesn't seem like it'd make much difference to a house sale.

    That’s right, Herzlos.
They are happy to put it elsewhere.
If you have ever been involved in issues of easements when buying or selling a house, you would refuse. The paperwork needs to be in place( think solicitor’s bill) and it can cause delays.

Is the situation as Herzlos says? Your garage wall indicates the boundary? Everything from the outer surface of your garage wall is on their side? If so, isn't there a slim mounting post that could be fitted in the ground, but stand against your wall? No actual physical attachment?

I have suggested a mounting post but they say the underground cabling would be more expensive. Actually a post away from my wall, nearer their front door would seem a good solution. It's up to them and their supplier now.
  • As a residential conveyancer, My answer to the neighbour would be No as it could give rise to far too many future issues and would actually need a formal Deed of Grant of Easement to be entered into between us.  I would also need to have my solicitor check my title deeds to see if there was any restrictive covenant against such an alteration to my wall or indeed granting any such right to third parties, so all things considered, and as there are other options open to you, I will have to say No.

That’s more or less what I told them, and they are fine with making other arrangements.
    thanks.
  • Why on earth would anyone agree to that?! The neighbour has plenty of alternatives - free-standing post, in the ground, attached to his own property to name but a few. Without the assistance of a crystal ball (please may I borrow it if it exists) there's no telling what problems this might cause in the future.
