Bbc iPlayer Olympics Timetable??

In 2020 I created desktop shortcut on my Android direct to BBC Olympics Timetable/Medals

BBC seem to have put obstructions in the way this year

1/ No way to navigate to Olympics timetable from iPlayer, only way seems to be by Google search

2/ No way to save desktop link to Olympics Timetable, link just redirected back to iPlayer home page???

3/ Followed BBC's prompt to download the iPlayer mobile app but still only opens in the home page and no way to navigate to the timetable

I've paid my licence fee

Am I missing something or are BBC blocking access to Olympics this year??

  • Could simply be that BBC have very limited coverage rights for these games and are only using two "channels" (one terrestrial, usually BBC1, and one streamer).

Not really worth putting up an interactive schedule if 95% of the events are not being shown live.

Discovery+ has the comprehensive coverage available in the UK, watching underwater BMX breakdancing as I type.

As @flaneurs_lobster says, they don't have much in the way of access compared with Discovery+ and Eurosport

Discovery+ paid £1.1 billion for the rights to 3,800 hours of coverage.

BBC's budget extends to 250 hours and 2 live streams at a time.

  • Great isn't it? Pay Discovery+ £3.99/month and a further £169.50/annum to the BBC to legally watch live broadcasts on Discovery+.

You’d need to persuade the government to:

    a) make the Olympics a listed event so that the International Olympic Committee can’t sell the rights  to the highest bidder for £1.2 billion pounds. Depriving FTA viewers of seeing all events.

    b) change/remove the BBC licence fee and/or Charter.

The previous government didn’t do either of these and I doubt the current government will.
  • The Olympics IS a listed event. Unfortunately that doesn't mean that it needs to be entirely on terrestrial channels - the current arrangement between Warner Bros Discovery and the BBC is deemed to provide sufficient terrestrial TV coverage.

BTW I can't answer the OP's question but the current broadcasting arrangements were also in place at the last Olympics in Tokyo, so those arrangements shouldn't be the cause of the problem.

The Warner Bros/ BBC deal is in place until 2032 including both Summer and Winter Olympics
