As usual, the real blame for these Companies lies with the Banks. They claim that it is not cost-effective to chase smaller dormant debts, so they sell them on to these sharks for a nominal sum. I have done some work chasing dormant debts and lost shareholders, and with a bit of logic and lateral thinking, tracing people is not actually that hard.
These shark Companies rely on using scare tactics and people not knowing their rights, hence the reason they always deal by phone. The excesses of debt collectors is regularly exposed, the industry claims it is 'rogue elements', Government Ministers may promise a review, and it all gets forgotten. The good thing is that websites like this are enlightening people, making the lives of these sharks more difficult.

    Hi Dylanwing
Yes it is truely sites like this (that need to keep going) that continue to expose these sharks. It is quite frightning really the amount of vulnerable people they prey on. I spoke to my cousin today to wish her happy new year and mentioned the letter I have received - guess what? Her neighbour who is now a single mum agreed to a payment plan with M******** in August. She was feeling very vulnerable after her divorce, thought it may put her home at risk, so phoned them. They were apparantly very persuasive and quite aggressive in their manner, so she has signed upto a payment plan she can ill afford. It turns out she had a Nat West card in her student days and assumed that because no one had contacted her in the last 10 years, this debt was cleared. How many more people have fallen victim to these people? It really is quite alarming.

Yes you are right. People who blatently don't pay their debts, I agree that's fine. My barclaycard was paid off 20 years ago.( I started doubting myself after the letter I received) but I know this was paid off. No one has contacted me IE. the bank to say I owe this debt ever. The issue is the low life scums that crawl out of the woodwork and the banks that sell information for pittance to allow bullyboy tactics that amounts to harrassment. WHY, if people owe debt do the banks not chase it themselves immediately? Can you answer that? I am proud to say I have never had an overdraft, have never had a cheque book, never had any store cards of any type, haven't ever had a bank loan and refuse all offers of an upgrade on my bank account. Will be mortgage free in 8 years and damned good with my money. So this reply is not really helpful in dealing with the issue of sharks that are allowed to prey on vulnerable people

No, you missed my point. The Banks could quite easily chase up these debts, but just let them lie, and then sell them for a pittance to very dodgy debt collectors. I found that they made minimal effort with small debts, i.e. failed to change address, could not be bothered to answer simple letters, and could not find the acount when I phoned. To ignore you for years and then suddenly let the rottweilers loose is pretty poor really. One firm I dealt with just hid behind the Data Protection Act (Which most Bank Staff fail to understand properly), and yet a few years later, they are happy to sell the same debt to a Company that breaks all rules, and hassles innocent victims if they have a similar name to a debtor.
Inmypocket - It was when I worked for Nat Worst in the early 80's, and tracing dormant debtors was hardly rocket science. You had details on file, so try contacting via employers, check phone book, or write c/o previous address - Tracked about 75% that way. In later years I worked in Share Registration, so you were chasing with good news. With the internet, Google/ Altavista, and some lateral thinking, tracing people was pretty easy. Friends Re-United proved invaluable on occasions.

No I knew exactly what Dylanwing was getting at. Dylanwing and I have totally opposing views on such things as other threads will tell you.
Dylanwing likes to blame everyone but themselves for causing problems like this, whereas I think people should take responsibility for their actions as it usually their own actions that put them in the predicament in the first place.
