I am hoping someone can help me out here. I will try and be concise on what has happened.

  • I arrived in Catania Airport in Sicily to find out my flight had been cancelled. There was no representative from Easyjet
  • Was advised I will get an email from Easyjet for next steps.
  • Email from Easyjet gave 2 options. 1 refund, 2 alternative flights.
  • It was Sunday and the earliest alternative flight was Friday or Saturday. This was not viable so I took it upon myself to get my and my party (3 people total) back home.
  • I stayed 1 night in Sicily, flew out to Rome. Stayed 1 night in Rome and flew to London City, hired a car back to Leeds (home).
  • Called travel insurance to claim approx £1500
  • Travel insurance said they need a refund from Easyjet to offset the claim.
  • I processed the Easyjet refund that took 7 days and they gave me approx £650 for the cancelled flights.
  • Travel insurance now telling me I am not covered as i had not checked in. They only cover if I had checked in and the flight was cancelled. I argued the point how can I check in to a cancelled flight (online check in does not count).

Is there anything I can do, or have i royally messed up by not taking alternative flights option? Remember this was Sunday and alternative flights from Sicily via Easyjet was not until Friday which just wasn't an option as i had to get to work. I didn't take option of a refund as this would not have covered my journey home.

To complicate matters I did all this on my travel policy (Halifax bank package) and the other 2 passengers are covered with Nationwide bank package. But I paid for all flights and return journey home expenses.

Insurers will never refund any costs paid for on behalf of someone who’s not named on the insurance policy.

ok thats makes sense. But they say i am not covered by my insurance as i had not checked in. They are saying I should have taken alternative flight arrangements from Easyjet- but that would mean coming back to the uk 5 days later so I made my own arrangements and that's what they are refusing to help me with

If EasyJet's proposed replacement flights were nearly a week later but alternative ones from different airlines were available more promptly then EasyJet should have either booked you onto the better ones or picked up the incremental cost of you booking them yourself - by accepting a refund you no longer have this option but the fact (or at least assertion) that the airline could/should have reimbursed more is presumably influencing the insurer's stance.

Yes but the silly situation i'm in is i never took the refund for this situation but then the insurer said they cant progress my claim until I request a refund and then they will put through a claim for the difference between flight cost and compensation claim. I did that then they rejected the whole claim! I just dont know what to do now
