BT charging extras without asking

I have just signed up with BT (or is it EE?)
I looked through all my confirmation emails to check what I would be paying.
I have now received an email saying that my first bill was ready to view, online.
On checking it, there was a charge for paper billing. But I was told by email to view my bill online?
I double checked all my paperwork (emails on what I had signed up for). NOWHERE was any mention of paper billing?
So I asked, via their chat service. They automatically cancelled paper billing and removed it from my bill.
On asking about paper billing and the chat bot said that it is applied automatically to everyone and cancelled if asked.
The chat bot said it was mentioned somewhere upon sign up but could not specify where.
I wonder if I was going to actually receive a paper bill.
This is a con! Not everyone checks their bills. £3 per customer per month adds up!

BT have a lot of things they try to get away with in my experience - I recently had to ask my MP to get involved over utter ridiculousness from BT. The MP got it ssorted but trying to deal with BT has similarities to swimming in treacle. It's not helped that so many people won't fight the big companies cos they don't think they can win. You can. In my case it was worth about £150. Definitely worth the fight.0
