Tell Us Once & HMRC Response

Im the executor for my mothers will.  Its pretty simple no IHT but of course with the sudden increase in interest rates and reduction in tax free allowance means some tax will be due but wasnt collected via PAYE for the last tax year and also for the few months of this current tax year prior to the date of her death.  Its likely that the estate will also have to pay CGT on some investments and income tax on interest on cash savings for the period of administration approaching 6 months now.

Ive used the "Tell us once" service which includes informing HMRC but of course had nothing, zilch, nadda from them.  All the other relevant parties, eg DWP, informed have responded and affairs sorted out.  Of course HMRC trots out the excuse about backlog but really it appears to be a total failure of management to appropriately scale their resources - enough whinging from me!

The forum concensus appears to be that I can write to HMRC with my calculations of tax owed for all of the above periods along with a cheque made out for the amount.  Size of the estate means it qualifies for the simple process.

Grateful for any help / suggestions on any forms to filled out and additional thoughts on process.

It is down to the administrators to report income and CG, it does not happen automatically.
  • All I can say is good luck with trying to get the HMRC to agree what you owe.  It took several letters and a couple of lengthy phone calls to get everything sorted for 2022-23.  Now I calculate the estate owes a small amount of tax for 2023-24 but letters seem to disappear into a black hole and phone calls don't get answered.  It is classified as a 'simple' estate, so theoretically all they need is a letter containing all the figures and HMRC will tell us what is owed and how to pay.  It's longer than 8 weeks since I last wrote so I guess I just have to bite the bullet and telephone them again.

HMRC won’t yet have received any figures from the financial institutions - so you are the only one with the figures at present for last year and anything due since death. You will need to report these. It may be they will send their assessment for 23/24 once they have the figures but that is unlikely to be before October in my experience. If you want to settle it quicker then you will need to phone them. I actually found them very helpful on the phone. Yes, I was on hold for a fair while but the woman who eventually answered 15 minutes before the scheduled end of the phone help hours was very efficient, very helpful and ensured everything was sorted before ending the call despite the fact it went over the scheduled end of her working day.

I informed HMRC via 'tell us once' on 22 June and received a letter from them on 30 July stating that no tax was due.

Interesting - I received a P1001 advising me that they would write within 8 weeks regarding income tax due until date of death.  Eleven weeks now and nothing heard.  Pretty sure something will be due but HMRC should have all the figures so I will just wait - as i'm not sure about all pension paid and tax received so let them tell me.  Also wrote to them with my figures re income and tax due post-death - but nothing heard yet (letter sent 3 weeks ago).   I guess HMRC doesn't want the money...

My personal tax account for 23/24 is still awaiting reconcilation. My partner's was completed 3 weeks ago (most likely because it was far simpler). All depends where you are in the queue. Somebody has to be last.
  • Yes I got the 8 weeks letter also but now 16 weeks and still nada.

As I had LPA and executor of her will I have all of the documentation for her tax account etc so I have been able to calculate what I think is owed both by my Mum and also by her estate. Mind you it has been a nightmare getting money and docs out of some organisations - Id swear they make it as difficult as they can to stop you getting at the cash!

Im thinking of writing with all of the calculations.

    Any thoughts?
  • I don't think the HMRC will be hurried. I finally sorted out Mum's tax for 2022-23 in May of this year. Since then I have written twice with all the details of interest the estate received.  First letter disappeared into a black hole, when I phoned again in August  they admitted they had the second letter but had not actioned it.  I was then told I could expect a response by October 2025, and no that is not a typo.  It's not a huge amount but obviously we can't finalise the estate until this is sorted.

Its what I've just done the other day with regards to my MiLs 2023/24 and 2024/25 tax and the tax due on the estate post death income to hopefully speed things up as, despite sending a slip of paper when they returned the grant of probate over two months ago, that said someone would be in touch shortly, they of course haven't been.

    Not holding my breath though
