increased selling limit

On various forums there are always lots of threads about ebay selling limits and how to increase them. My current business account was opened in around 2000 and I've always had about a £1,000,000 monthly limit which I have of course never ever used.
However I have always poodled along on my private accounts (dating from 2010 and 2015) with £3000 or so and about 600 listings as a limit and as I've never even got to that amount I've never worried about it . Today though one of my private accounts had the monthly limit increased to 10.000 items and £100.000 - with a note saying if I want more I can just ask. The odd thing is I've done nothing different, never got anywhere close to my previous limits- and the new limits seem very generous for a private account.
Ebay seem to be treating the private accounts rather generously.

Any business sellers who are getting away with registering as private sellers will be rubbing their hands, mind you I wonder if E Bay are getting desperate. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0

I was thinking more along the lines of ebay letting HMRC sort it out. As all this income is being reported automatically more and more 'private' sellers may run the risk of actually being caught- and saving ebay the bother.Grumpelstiltskin said:Any business sellers who are getting away with registering as private sellers will be rubbing their hands, mind you I wonder if E Bay are getting desperate.
Ebay still get fees from private sellers, nowhere near as much as from businesses, but volume can still turn a decent amount.
It just seemed odd as I wasn't anywhere near my previous limits - so it isn't like I'm suddenly going to discover another attic or shed somewhere with thousands of pounds worth of things to sell. All my accounts, private and business are already over the £1000 reporting limit anyway.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Just to be clearGrumpelstiltskin said:Any business sellers who are getting away with registering as private sellers will be rubbing their hands, mind you I wonder if E Bay are getting desperate.
eBay will pass on data to HMRC automatically if you're selling 30 or more items a year OR have total earnings over the equivalent of £1,770. From the 1st January 2025 this information will be shared automatically.
No doubt HMRC will have a team assigned purely to this task. Sending out have you forgotten to inform us of something letters.

Same here, gone from 1,000 to 10,000.
Makes me laugh as I only have 3 items on at the moment and I think the most I have ever listed at one time is 10ish items.
Also, yesterday ebay left a message on my page saying they have changed "sold" (on the left side list with overview, selling etc) to "orders" How stupid, sold means sold not orders!
However, today it is back to "sold"0 -
That was my thought as well, but I'm sure we all recognise that a miniscule amount of people will actually be caught straight away as HMRC have not allocated a great deal of man power to this so won't be able to cope with the millions of reported accounts. Perhaps it may act as a deterrent.Hoenir said:

Also I had overlooked the fact that there are people trading as private on ebay but actually declaring to HMRC - which rather blows my theory out of the water.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Yep likewise I got my limits increased, I probably sell 1 item every couple of months.
Know what you don't0 -
private seller. where does one see these limits?
p.s anyone having issues with "bulk re-list". its just hanging rather than populating the various fields.0 -
I could have told you easily until this morning when ebay have once again completely messed up the dashboad with their 'improvements'/ Why do ebay do this I have spent ages trying to get my launch page usable again - the fact they've hidden my scheduled and unsold listings is a matter of frustration.pfpf said:private seller. where does one see these limits?

Anyway, back to the question, on one of my accounts it shows on my launch page (My ebay) under monthly limits. It shows the amount of listings and the value as 2 lines, with what I've used and what I have remaining for the month. On that account it is the last box on the right next to promotional offers. However as the launch page has changed twice already today goodness knows where it will be when I log back in.
On the other account, I haven't tracked it down yet but it used to be below promotional offers.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've had an e-mail to say my limits have increased too. I've not bothered to check what they are now as I've listed and sold the grand total of one item since … 2019 I think

HMRC use a system called Connect. Now holds over 55 billion pieces of information on taxpayers. Information that Connect holds and has access to includes and is not restricted tosoolin said:

- Land Registry records. To check whether a taxpayer should be able to afford a property.
- Credit / debit card payments. From providers such as Visa and Mastercard. This can allow HMRC to compare transactions with your declared card takings.
- Activity on online platforms. These include sites such as eBay and Airbnb, to check whether you are trading or hiring out property without declaring it.
- DVLA records. To check whether you should be able to afford to buy or make payments on a car.
