Yesterday Virgin Media O2 confirmed that it will switch of 3G in 2025 and will begin migrating customers away from 2G.

It will leave a reduced 2G service in place for some years for emergency use and smart meters/devices.

About 1% of O2 customers use 2G. Some of these will just need a new SIM but others will need a new phone.

It’s been suggested elsewhere that given the low cost of a basic 4G handset bought in bulk that O2 might offer them at a discount or free.
