Just wait until they call, keep proof of who you are and where you live by the front door and show it to them.  Once the debt collector knows its not you, they will stop harrassing you.  I've done this when I had debt collectors for an ex come round several years after we split up and he left this address. Never saw them again.
  • Thank you to all forum members for very useful information and guidance. I was so confused and not sure what to do. I am sure I will be able to deal with it more confidently.  I will call the person today and ask him to come and see me in case he still needs to visit.

As far as I know - debt collectors have a bark worse than their bite. They can’t repossess any items without a writ, and they have to be sure the items are the debtors and not someone else’s. The most the debt collectors can do is send scary sounding letters, knock on the door etc. But if they have got the wrong address then they should be told, epically if there’s another similar road in your local neighbourhood (crescent drive vs crescent close for example).

On another note - be sure to check your credit score and report. If someone’s been able to set up a legit account in someone else’s name at your address then it may affect you.

Just the credit report, the score is meaningless nonsense.

    OP their website says:

    https://www.cdergroup.co.uk/contact/hmcts-court-enforcement/

I’ve received a letter for someone that does not live at my address, what shall I do?
The letter has been sent to your address on the instruction of the court.
To remove the address, you will need to provide us with proof of residency. This can be either a recent mortgage or council tax statement, tenancy agreement or a utility bill dated within the last 3 months.
    Once received we will:
notify our client to enable them to update their records
remove your address meaning that you will receive no further letters or visits from us
Please be aware that if the documentation supplied is not clear we may need to contact you again to confirm the information.
Click here to send us an email with the information we need. You should attach photographs or scanned images of the supporting evidence.
Until we receive this information we must act on the instructions we have so please provide the information as soon as possible to avoid further inconvenience.

If you are concerned about your family might be best to get a ring doorbell and tell them not to open the door to anyone they don't know (perhaps a good idea in general really if you are away often).

If the kids are young and you can put a chain or such on the door out of their reach that should help prevent them opening the door at all.

I doubt these people want to waste time chasing money at the wrong place so it would hopefully be the end of it if you supply the above :)

    Why?

Courts do not just hand out warrants to any tom, !!!!!! or Harry without a good & very valid reason.
