Paying in on same day

Can anyone tell me what the official position is on this. On 27th december i noticed in the morning in internet banking that a dd was coming out that day so i went to halifax and paid in £150.00 over the counter at about 12 noon to cover the dd going out. Yesterday a similar thing happened and i paid in £300 to cover 2 other dd's. Just to clarify this isnt a regular occurence, just had one or two problems keeping on top of things over christmas.
Yesterday morning i had an email off halifax saying i was going to be charged 35.00 for paying the dd on the 27th. I said i paid money into to cover it and explained my situation and that it had happened again that morning. She said the charge was fair but she would refund the £35 as goodwill gesture. Today i have recieved another letter of them saying i am going to be charged another 35.00 for the 28th December.
I just called customer services to query and she said the woman i spoke to at 5pm last night would not have known for certain that you would have been charged for the 28th as well as the 27th so could only refund the 27th charge. She then said she would not refund the 2nd one as i had already had one done the day before.
So i was charged 35.00 for halifax taking out a dd at 3am according to the customer services and me paying money in when the branch opened at 10am.
Anyone got an advice. I think it is unfair if you pay in same day to cover.

Yes, it is unfair but that is what banks do. Glad to hear they credited you the first £35. When the bank charges case if finished you will be able to claim the other £35 and any other charges you've had in the last 6 years. Unfortunately nothing much else you can do (at least not that I know of).

Think that does my head in most is that woman told me night before that everything would be ok and that neither HSBC or LLoyds TSB would have charged me.

I think it really depends on the bank as from experience I know that Lloyds TSB give you until 12pm the same day to cover it but HBOS don't.
But not much you can do about it I'm afraid.0 -

Lloyds actually allow you to pay in as long as it is before 3.30pm they call it the grace period....same as hsbc.0 -

No - it's in the T&Cs of your account. The money has to be in the account the working day before with Halifax - and most other Banks. The ones that allow a 'top up' on the day are the exception.
As you've clearly got their online facility - the DDs show (date / last value claimed etc) in the left bar adjacent to your current account, if you need forewarning?
Personally - if this is the first time - I'd try them again on the basis of confusion over the 2 days. But I wouldn't go for the
.... approach as they'll simply point to T&Cs.. unfair if you pay in same day to coverIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thanks for that. I agree with your comments but still think it is a fair underhand procedure. I have tried again and told no. I can checked the dd's but most of them say variable as the day they come out and seem to be random. Reason for the confusion was over the christmas period. Used cards and then dd's came out on same day.
I have written letter to halifax on the off chance they will be nice to me0 -
my daughter banks with Nationwide and found out the hard way about banks and charges.
She took a break from work when her son was about 3 - he's 6 now, had a rented flat, she got housing benefit and income support. Income support paid weekly into her account, I can't remember the day it was paid in but i think it was Fraday.
She had a few DDs to pay from her account. She assumed on the days when IS was due to be paid and DD due out everything would be fine.
What would happen was this:
DD due on the same day IS paid - DD not paid - £35 charge
this went on for some time - she didn't realise for a while what was happening. when she went to draw cash on Fridays the money was there.
Then the charges were applied about 2 months or more after the event - result - unauthorised overdraft - £35 charge. (her fault for not reading the letters properly)
This went on for a few months and the charges were fairly large, in the end I got her to ring them and find out when the dd's came out of her account and when IS was credited. It turned out that dd's came out at about 3 am and the bank credited her IS at about 5 am, although they knew it was there and could see the credit. What really annoyed me was they knew her IS went into the bank every week and for the sake of 2 hours or so the bank wasn't prepared to move an inch
There were times when the charges came out that, had she not had the support of her father and myself I don't know what she would have done or how she would have fed her self and her son.
This was not someone deliberately going overdrawn, but rather someone being put into overdraft by the bank and charged for the privilege.
Needless to say her time of staying at home with her son was not very long within 6 months she was back in full time work.
She was too worried to claim back all the charges as she understood the nationwide would close her account. I told her to open another account and then claim back the charges - but she hasn't0 -
Nationwide were closing accounts but I think so many complaints to the FO and them having to compensate customers have slowed this down.
Ask her to think again about reclaiming as her NY resolution by the time it will take to get her statements through etc we might well have a better knowledge of how the test case will be going.
As regards the timing for the ins and outs of dds and credits etc each bank is different and you do really need to check with your own bank as to how they do it. I'm with RBS and they certainly seem to update in the early hours of the morning.0 -

Sorry, no advice, but the same thing happened to me today. i am furious as I tried paying money into the Halifax on Friday in Streatham (where I live), but the branch was closed due to 'unforseen circumstances'. I was unable to get to another branch before closing time, and then away until Monday afternoon (at 1.30pm) - when I thought I would be able to pay my money in then. Being New Years Eve I thought they may shut at 3pm... but no, they shut at 1pm! I went to 4 different branches, just to see if they were open.
so, today I got to the Halifax this morning to pay in money which I knew would be coming out of my account - only to find it had been taken out before the banks even opened!
This is ridiculous. I had also been charged £35 for a previous DD which had failed to go out on 17th of the month (even though I had paid enough money into cover it on the same day) - and like you said - DDs can vary from month to month as to what day they come out on. the HSBC wouldn't have charged me if I had paid money in on the same day.
What angers me is that this 'bouncing' of the DD didn't even show up on the print out that I got from the branch, or on my account when I checked it the day I paid the money in.
Because of the £35 charge that occurred on 17th, but wasn't charged onto my account until the 1st Jan (again, banks are shut on Jan 1st, so how can any charges / DDs or other transactions take place) put me over my overdraft facility, I then incurred 2 more charges today for 2 standing orders of £1 each!! - Again, even though I paid money in to cover the charge of £35 and the standing orders.
Also, with another Halfax account that I have another DD bounced today - possibly incurring another charge of £35 plus £28.
Having spoken to them, they have reversed all the charges accept for the initial £35 (the one that caused all the problems) and said I had to call back tomorrow to reverse the latest bounced DD.
Of course, I'm glad that they have done this. But my point is, it is unfair in the first place. The only reason that they have reversed my charges is because of a 'goodwill' gesture - as my accounts have not incurred any other charges in the past 6 months.
It makes me so angry!0 -
I too am having Halifax charging problems at the moment. Last Friday I put in £700 (£500 cash, £200 cheque) to cover DDs coming out 31st and today. I've checked today and they've charged me for the DD which came out on 31st as apparently the cheque hasnt cleared (and won't clear until tomorrow). This is the first time this has happened as they've used a cheque amount OK to be able to pay a DD. I'm worried now in case they charge again for the 2 DDs that went out today. So a phonecall to Halifax I think, and possibly the closure of my account with them - see what they say anyway!
But the OP's problem with same day deposit and charge has also happened to me, and apparently Halifax changed their procedure last year. They used to say that if the account balanced at the end of the business day, then they wouldn't charge, but as pointed out their T&Cs changed.
I personally think they've tightened up in response to the many people claiming and need to make money elsewhere!Official DFW Nerd Club #20  Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts
