Last Friday I put in £700 (£500 cash, £200 cheque) to cover DDs coming out 31st and today. I've checked today and they've charged me for the DD which came out on 31st as apparently the cheque hasnt cleared !

If the DD was dependent on the cheque - how on earth could that clear between 28th and 31st Dec? They're adjacent working days!

This is the first time this has happened as they've used a cheque amount OK to be able to pay a DD.

Only if the cheque had cleared. They're consistent on what represents a credit balance - and what doesn't.

If you run on the edge - get an agreed overdraft to prevent you from dropping off ...... and into charging territory
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

I had to go to my local branch of Halifax on New Year's Eve but I phoned ahead (to some office in Halifax) and was told the branches would be closing at 1:30. I got there at 1:00 and it was closing. I then noticed that all the other banks in the High Street were still open at 3:00. I don't know why Halifax closed early. New Year's Eve is a normal working day and a bank should not close early. I would demand that the £35 charge be refunded. They had no right to close early on that day.

Demanding anything will get you nowhere.

A bank (or shop for that matter) can close anytime they want. They would of had a sign up saying what days they were closing early and when they were closing.

Back on Topic: My bank (NATWEST) have always (and still do as far as i am aware) operated a "Credit before Debit" system where any cash deposits are credited before any debits are made.
  • Yup, I have had this problem also with the RBS!
My account manager has kindly refunded an a couple of occasions, but I can appreciate how bloody frustrating it is when you apy money in on the same day to cover and you still get the DD or cheque rejected and have to pay charges!!
Explanation from my BRM was that all 'automated' transactions take place during the ''wee small hours'' BEFORE the business day begins and sufficient funds have got to be in place the day before.
This has only just changed recently, as I was paying in money to cover, up till 3pm on the day the transactions were due!!
I find it VERY annoying indeed!!
Surely a business day means just that?!? And if you have suffiecient funds in your account by the close of business, then surely that is right!!??!! Or am I being stupid??

Not when the T&Cs (as signed to or as varied) say it has to be in the working day before! As virtually all do.

    hi
A&L say it takes upto 3 days (working) for cash to be available in your account. This despite it being shown as available balance within minutes of paying in. This is clearly to misslead people into using funds they are told are available but clearly arnt under there own rules.
