  • If you want a fix - look what fixes are available from other suppliers and make your choice.  Outfox the Market are sometimes cheap, and I've heard that Octopus are expensive for 'normal' fixed rates.

If you're not sure whether you want a fix or not - that's just guessing how you think prices will (or might) change and then deciding whether you want the risk of that change happening compared to knowing exactly what each unit will cost for a year.

One person's risk appetite and ability to deal with the risk going right or wrong is different from another's.  Only you know what is best for you.

BarelySentientAI  as much as I trust and value what you say, I've just put up a 2 collumn word page with out fox and edf side by side, I'd listen to others, but that I see you couldn't fit a Rizzler between them. One will have a slightly cheaper unit charge and the other a slightly cheaper daily charge

  • Sounds about right.  There's not massive differences between any suppliers at the moment - things like £50 over a whole year might be the best you can do.

If you use a lot, a tiny saving on unit charge might add up.  If you hardly use anything, a tiny saving on standing charge is a big proportion of your bill.

I've stuck on a tracker tariff (price cap - £50 nominal) because I can't be bothered to spend the effort to work it out precisely for my circumstances.

What I should do, personally, is an Octopus ToU tariff, but I'm just too lazy to switch there.  Again, isn't the right answer for everyone.

big brother ref 'We'd like to remind **Forumites** to please avoid political debate on the Forum.?
    Which one?
People are not robots, they have individual character.
The type of comment that you describe in it self is not rude or offensive in them selves

BarelySentientAI I've just looked at octops's tarif that you mention
To conclude, it looks like there is very little to separate even three of the suppliers, so it is best if things are wrapped up now.
    Many thanks to every one

Hopefully the orwellian comments like this at the top op the page will now cease and desist and big brother will find something useful to do with their time

I think if you search the net you may find sites that offer incentives to switch to Octopus from EDF ?

Recently I was considering switching and accidently found a site offering cash to switch but like yourself working out the  exact saving without a incentive is a pain in the backside .

More so if your a low user as the margins are much tighter .....thats when a incentive will look better than the actual savings  when switching providers for a low user
Fixed tariffs are like gambling these days ....except you know how much your going to pay .

Edf gives out tariff saving estimates based on how much you spend if you ring them so the info they give is one size fits all type of answer its not specifically accurate to your use .

BlueonBlue yes I am a low user. as I live alone. My 55 inch TV is plenty big enough
If you click on my user name james_smitha a menu pops up with the option to leave a message appears, you should then be able to say some of the things that you have described without upsetting bigbrother

James I dont get the big brother thing you mention perhaps you could you expand on that a little ?
But imagine its a MSE thing or possibly opinioned MSE posters .....you do get some utter rubbish on MSE .

The private parking board is one area on MSE that wont tolerate any false incorrect or manipulative info  from MSE or its posters .
They can spot BS instantly and will counter post with the truth which is quite refreshing .
Nothing to do with energy but they relentlessly fight a fight MSE wont .

All I want is the lowest energy cost for a low user in london but realise Im not up to speed on here at pres so will take my time and just stay on the EDF varible until I get some monthly usage figures
I,m looking at Octopus at pres but not sure yet .

Just searched through my past history online so will PM you the site that supposedly offers cashback as I believe that sort of thing is against the rules on MSE.
Its not a referal or anything I think its if anyone switches  through the site
I dont know anything about the site but if it offers cash and if its geniune then why not as the cashback is more than you will save switching if your a low user .
I would think they will need actual monthly usage figures which is what I need to figure out first otherwise imo the whole exercise seems inaccurate .
Switching has to be for a cheaper tariff in my case then any cashback will be a bonus if the site is genuine.

  • Big brother and others, through gritted teeth I just signed to an EDF, fix that is indeed a fix in more ways than one.
As I understand it very little of the country's gas. possibly 3 percent comes from anywhere near Ukraine/ Russia, so many might question how gas prices can be affected by the war in Ukraine so much
