I'm not sure whether you are hoping to make a bomb by selling the fireplace, but could you just remove the sticking out mantlepiece shelf? That would give you 90% of the extra space, with 10% of the work.

No, just hope someone can reuse, I'm allergic to landfill! I'd just like it removed as intact as possible, so someone else CAN reuse it. I'll probably end up giving it away (for a donation to our local hospice) to anyone with the energy and enthusiasm to restore it.
