A new belt won't be any tighter than the old one - tensioners take care of that.Jumblebumble said:
I will just add in case the OP is curious why the water pump needs doing at the same time it is because a new tight cam belt will put a lot more strain on the 123000 mile waterpump bearings which will probably fail in short order.cymruchris said:

It's done 123,000 miles. 2013. Peugeot expert2 litre. I guess has a cam belt. As far as I can see in service history no cam belt has been changed. Is it due?
I’d be wanting it done last week. And as above get the water pump done too. Otherwise when that snaps in a weeks time
you’ll have a lot more to complain about that’s for sure !!
Change the cambelt and you're basically doing all of the labour needed to change the water pump. It's a "parts cost only" job which adds, what? £35 to the overall cost of a job totalling a few hundred quid.0 -
No, it's because the water pump is driven by the cambelt.I will just add in case the OP is curious why the water pump needs doing at the same time it is because a new tight cam belt will put a lot more strain on the 123000 mile waterpump bearings which will probably fail in short order.
To change it when the belt is off is trivial.
To change it at another time is the same job as changing the cambelt.
It's basic precautionary maintenance combined with a huge amount of labour saving.
The belt tension is set by the spring-loaded tensioner, and should be consistent throughout the life.1 -
I have it booked in for new cambelt in three weeks. Earliest I could get. I'm a total idiot not picking up on this. I know nothing about vans. Worried it'll go before. Really stressing. I guess I should emphasise the water pump too or is that obvious0

No harm in clarifying, but no mechanic worth his/her salt will change the belt without doing the pump at the same time.textbook said:I guess I should emphasise the water pump too or is that obvious
They'll almost certainly order a timing belt "kit", which will include the pump, rather than the individual parts.1 -
I've also noticed it makes a clunking noise when not in gear.0

I sometimes change a timing belt without doing the water pump. Just saying.0
