Whatever is in the expansion tank doesn't look right.

Also, the part with the cracked pipe is the oil filter housing, which will have a coolant feed to it as it also operates as a heat exchanger.

    Many diesel engines have this.
Engine oil is pumped around a heat exchanger that is plumbed into the coolant system, usually around the oil filter housing and they are prone to leaking, not just externally but internally.
When it does, oil and water will mix together and it'll look like a black mess in the expansion tank.

Some mistake this for a head gasket problem, but when head gaskets go on a diesel, the coolant system erupts with a lot of force (compression ignition engines run very high compression) which splattering the engine bay in oily watery gloop and you know the head gasket has gone!

I would guess you have had a problem with this oil filter heat exchanger for a while as it looks like engine oil has been getting into the coolant system for a while.

They said the black foamy gunk in the header tank  for cooling was an additive like stop leak but you think oil?     The water level dropped in the header tank while I worked came back at 2pm and nothing in there.   Topped up again and hour later water had dropped again a bit.

Young mechanics.  Should I go elsewhere? To my old trusty mechanic.

They want me to take it back in tomorrow morning and leave with them to check for leak.

Other things they're now wondering if it's the water pump ?

On another note, I've done 123,000 miles on peugeot expert van 2 litre.  Should the cam belt have been changed?  I'll check service history to see if previous owner before 2017 changed it.  2013 van

Is the photo the header tank?

It's difficult to tell from here but did you put this stop leak gunk in there or pay for someone to do it?

If you stick your finger in there does it feel oily?

If the heat exchanger is exchanging more that heat, oil will find it's way into the coolant and coolant might finds it's way into the engine oil.

What does the engine oil look like, if you remove the oil filler cap is there a creamy dirty looking mayonnaise under the cap?

Have they repaired the cracked pipe?
Does the coolant still go down?

I have no memory of myself or anyone else putting stop leak in it

They replaced cracked pipe and housing.

They checked for leaks and can't find anything.  Not sure about level,  guess I'm gonna have to monitor it.

If it has a timing belt i would check if it has been changed if not when it is due as this is very important ,seroius damage can happen if it goes.

Check your oil, undo the oil filler cap and turn it over.
As it's a diesel you should just see shiny black oil.

It's done 123,000 miles.  2013.  Peugeot expert2 litre.  I guess has a cam belt.   As far as I can see in service history no cam belt has been changed.  Is it due?

Yes! 11yrs and 120k+ miles...? DEFINITELY due. Get the waterpump done at the same time.

As far as the goop in the header tank goes, it could be a leaking heat exchanger between oil filter and block.

If it’s never had one in that time -
I’d be wanting it done last week.

And as above get the water pump done too. Otherwise when that snaps in a weeks time
you’ll have a lot more to complain about that’s for sure !!

I will just add in case the OP is curious why the water pump needs doing at the same time it is because a new tight  cam belt will put a lot more strain on the 123000 mile waterpump bearings which will probably fail in short order.
