those who think water should be paid for - if there was a way to have to pay for air, would you agree that air should be paid for?
That's just not a comparison. Water is delivered to your door, without restriction and clean. It is also taken away once you've used it.

If you would prefer to travel 5 miles for a few litres of untreated water every day then feel free to cancel payment switch your supply off and go fill your milk cartons at the river.....oh and good luck disposing of your sewerage
Quite happy to pay my water rates for the convenience of not having to go to the river, but I find actually paying for water wrong (other opinions are available)
The cost of the water is the cost of processing, supply, infrastructure, treatment etc. If you do not thing you should pay, who do you think should cover the cost?

You did, but it was a false comparison, does not benefit the discussion and is a statement designed to sway based on irrationality.

As I have said twice I am happy to pay my water rates to have water delivered to my home. It is the paying for actual water than I find problematic.

I compared it to air being another substance that is essential to life.  How is that irrational? If companies could control the supply of air, do you think that would be fine and that people should pay for it?

you don't pay for the actual water - you pay for the processing - the processing charge is based on the volume that is being processed.

If air needed to be processed, then whoever does that processing would charge for it.

Some stand to benefit from metering, others don't. Metering feels fairer though, at least to me. The amount of water you use is the amount of water that was treated before it came to you, plus a % of it is also exiting your property into the sewer system.

It just shows you dont understand it.
Pretty much any ressource that is free will be excessively consumed. But CLEAN DRINKING water is not a free and unlimited ressource.
plus it needs to be delivered.

CLEAN DRINKING water cannot and must not be free.

Shows you don’t read what is said, but thanks for the contribution, though I don’t share your opinion.

Why don't you just invest in several water butts - then you can have the sanitised water for free?

Or go down to your local river with a few buckets every day?

Here in Scotland, only businesses have water meters. Domestic users still have a water ‘rates’ contribution as a part of the Council Tax.
    I like it that way.
I certainly try to restrict my water usage and prevent wastage. However I’m also aware that I never have to water the garden because it’s always raining !
If domestic water meters came into being here I would not be disappointed as I don’t think it would affect me. At the same time I don’t find it unreasonable for local people to use water when we have it to excess.
