Ok, I’m not dumb but I’m a bit confused about the 10 year rule for passport when entering the EU. I’m only asking because this past week we were boarding a Ryanair flight and the checkin girl mentioned that my wife had better get hers sorted because although it was issued in April 2015 it expires in August 25.

So, we are traveling to Spain on the 4th of September and returning home 22nd of September.
Her passport was issued on 16th April 2015  and expires 16th August 2025. I believe we have to ignore the extension and class it as expiry 16th April 2025? Is it 6 months or 3 months that need to have left on it on entry to Spain?
She won't be able to use it to travel to Spain (or any other Schengen country) after 15th April 2025. So no problem for your Spain  2024 trip.  Also has to return 3 months before the August 2025 expiry date.

A UK passport is valid until the expiry date printed in it.
It is only for entry to EU countries that the validity in excess of ten years is no longer accepted.

I know, as I mentioned I was talking about Spain
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

So my passport is not valid for a trip to Spain on 12th Oct 2024 as it was issued on 9th Oct 2014 and expires on 9th Feb 2025?

I had better apply for a new one right away.

Good job I saw this post.

That's right - that passport will only get you into the EU up to 9 October 2024 (and out again by 9 November 2024).

No great hurry if it's a straightforward renewal, which are taking just a week or two these days. You won't receive the additional validity for early renewal that you obtained last time.

It will be a lot easier for travellers when all the old ( passports with extra time added ) passports are replaced ,they will have a start date and an expired date so a lot less confusion.

The passport office stopped adding extra months by September 2018. That's how I first found out about the change because MSE featured it. I renewed mine in early Jan 2019 and got exactly 10 years.

All passports already have a start date and an expiry date, it's just that some people don't understand the (current) need to refer to the start date and think it's only the expiry date that matters!

However, once we reach September 2028, the start date will return to being effectively irrelevant as it'll automatically be ten years before the expiry date, so any passport that hasn't reached its satisfies the expiry date check will be valid satisfy the issue date check for entry to the EU.

Incorrect. You still need 3 month's validity, and not just 3 months on entry but 3 months after your planned return date.

But by then we'll probably need an ETIAS which hopefully will have an inbuilt check that the passport is valid for your travels.
