Are you certain that it's  definitely a legitimate email from TV Licencing? I frequently receive scam emails saying my licence is about to expire and asking for my payment information.

My thoughts entirely - maybe you've been scammed?
No.  I went on to the gov.uk site to renew.  Not so dim as to click on a link in an email no matter how legit it looks!

When I changed from annual to monthly last year, I selected the option online. This then kicked off some emails from them where I had to fill in a form and then the annual DD was cancelled. Once the existing license (was a month or so later) had expired I was sent a new number and the DD became active (double the fee for the first 6 months and then drops to 1/12th for the next 6 and following). So essentially you pay for the 1 year over 6 months, then the next year 6 months in advance and 6 months in the license year.

Did you get those emails? If not something is not right.
