My  5 yr old laptop cant use windows 11 . Funds being tight, I've bought a refurb HP elitebook with a more modern processor and more ram for £280 with warranty and I really can't tell that it's used. Ebay user is Orbit if you want to take a look (not affiliated, just pleased with my purchase!)

Fair enough but if you had had the operating system on your laptop completely reinstalled it would have made a vast difference, as it did on mine. It seems that's not what you had done.

I also am not 100% sure what the problem the op has

is it that the laptop used to be fast enough but over time it has slowed down and now it is slow in which case a reinstall would seem in order

or is it that it was never fast enough in which case obviously a new laptop with a better spec would be needed
I have had my current laptop for 10 years, had new SSD and clean five years ago.

Its the only laptop I have so I have nothing to compare it to regarding speed, but it seems very slow on opening, browsing and especially when I am switching between various tabs and Excel.

Have you checked if there is anything obviously limited by looking at resource manager?  It maybe that with only 4GB of RAM you have none spare and it is having to page all the time when swithcing between applications.

No, I will have a look at that.  Do I find resource manager via settings?  Thanks.
