Virgin broadband renew contract sweet spot?

I am up for the end of broadband contract early next month and called my provider, Virgin, a few times to check what they can offer.
The prices have just dropped by about 20% between the first quote last week, to todays quote.
I tried to elicit what the structure of their renewal contract price strategy was , and the operative said 'i dont understand the science behind it, sometimes they go up and sometimes they go down'
So, I was just wondering what others have experienced when haggling with Virgin for renewing contract? Does it get cheaper and cheaper the closer I get to the last day of my 18 month contract? Or is there a 'sweet spot' as is often said about car insurance?
I am interested in peoples observations on this

When Amazon has a Prime Day sale (usually in July and occasionally another one elsewhere in the year) some other companies jump on the proverbial bandwagon and offer deals as well. This may be what has happened here, but there are always deals for new customers to some extent.

I was wondering of anyone has any insight into the 'algorithm/science' behind when to bag the best price?0 -
I'm on Volt 250 with landline, paying £26p/m. Contract ending early September. Called a couple of weeks ago and was offered £35 which I declined. Called again today and said if I couldn't get a decent deal I'd probably cancel and go with a local fibre company which would work out at about the same I'm paying now.
They came back with an offer of just over £19... I snapped the guys hand off.2 -
