Toilet roll - I think I need a testing nerd lol

Has anybody ever actually done any testing on the genuine 'best value' toilet roll?
They all look pretty much the same on the shelf but;
Some have smaller inner tubes, so more sheets per same size roll
Some are thicker sheets, or better quality sheets, so you use fewer sheets per 'visit'
So it's not just a case of buying the cheapest on the day you shop
Also, what about the ones you can buy online that are bamboo or environmentally friendly from e.g. Cheeky Panda or Who Gives A Crap? Are they really as expensive as they seem or do they work out cheaper?

I encountered the Who Gives a Crap in a holiday cottage this year.  The spares looked really nice sitting on the windowsill in their colourful wrappers & as I had been thinking about buying some I was pleased with the opportunity to test drive.  But they are literally c r @ p.  3 ply and as soon as the paper touches moisture it disintegrates.  And bits stays stuck to you where you don't want it to be!  I would have sooner used the Izal paper from my scholl toilet memories.

Luckily I had taken a couple of Tesco rolls with me as you cannot rely on rentals to provide more than the few sheets that a previous renter left behind.  And how WGAC can be ethical/environmentally friendly is beyond me - it is shipped in from China & each roll has an individual wrapper.  Leave the bamboo for the Pandas.  I just buy mid-range ones - at the mo Tesco Luxury Soft double length rolls - always stock up when they are on offer.  Soft, long and strong as necessary to get the job done!

I can report exactly the same 'experience' with WGAC. I was really surprised how disappointing it was. We usually buy Tesco double rolls - they last longer (reduces FORO - Fear Of Running Out), smaller storage space required, cheaper transport costs so marginally more environmentally friendly. And efficient and effective in use!

I like Asda shades. Bigger rolls that last longer. Not compared it to anything else though

Asda shades used to be my go to brand but since they changed them, they are awful now.😢 Definitely don’t last as long as they should, don’t fit on a standard loo roll holder, are thinner and nowhere near as good quality as they used to be

I think it's also down to how you use it!

Depending on thickness and quality, pick few slices, pile them together, wipe, remove the top dirty one, and then add more if needed, if not, just use what's left 😅

That way even a cheap luxury toilet paper from eBay will last surprisingly long.

But agree with you, there's no singular way of measuring quality of paper, it can have larger sheets, thicker sheets, more layers, more sheets, different quality..

I have not tried Cheeky Panda, but I was persuaded to try My Oceans: https://myoceans.co.uk/product/plastic-free-toilet-paper/

It's not as good as my previous choice (CostCo's own brand, 3 ply and not necessarily cheap), but it's OK. I had been able to try it beforehand at my son's house.

Having decided I didn't much like it (and therefore wanting to try something like Cheeky Panda), I failed to navigate their 'subscription' service, and a second box of the stuff turned up before we were half-way through the first box. Clearly we don't use as much as I thought. I had been sneaking the remaining 'good stuff' into 'my' bathroom, but then realised DH has caught onto this and is doing the same (no we don't really have a bathroom each, but we do have 'habitual loos'. I may need to launch a pre-emptive strike and hide the last four rolls.

However, I am very happy with the Oceans laundry sheets: https://myoceans.co.uk/product/laundry-sheets/ which work well, don't stink, and rinse out well.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • We swear by Costco Kirkland toilet rolls. Everything Kirkland brand is cheaper and superior to other brands IMO. We also use Kirkland kitchen roll & dishwasher tablets for the same reason. Always disappointed if we ever run out and have to buy an alternative. Well worth the Costco membership if you are eligible! Or find a friend who is and stock up.,. :)
