Romford, is there a wooden fence post there at the mo? If so, how is that fixed?
Yes old batten attached to the garage wall, been there over fifty years by the look of it but still in good condition.
I was hoping the wooden post was sunk - buried - into the founds! You could then just drill out the old stump, and drop the concrete post in to the formed hole - but that would be too much like good luck
You could always test the ground next to the wall to see if the founds do come out beyond it, but almost certainly it will. So that best leaves the options given by others - attach the post to the wall itself, using brackets and stuff.
Try and avoid drilling through the post as there will be rebar in there - somewhere. But, if you check the bottom of the post, the end of the bar(s) might be visible, so if they are clearly avoidable, then drilling through the post and expansion-bolting to the wall remains an option, and would be neat. But, I think Biking Bud's brackets above is the most practical overall solution.
