iPhone SE second generation, a few years old now and the battery health is down 77%.
Local chap with a good reputation wants 30 quid for a new battery, Apple want 65.
I know that in the past apple have had issues with non-authorised repairs and it has impacted on the use of the phone.
False economy  or money saving to go for the cheaper option?

The phone will know that the battery is not genuine and the battery statistics will be off. That’s probably not a major issue.

Some but not many third party batteries don’t have protection circuitry built in.

More importantly, people often find that third party batteries either have lower capacity or don’t last as long (needing to be replaced again much sooner)

I’d ask the repairer where the batteries come from and seek confirmation that they have all relevant protection circuitry, that they have equal or higher capacity to the official battery and how long the guarantee is for.

I think for me it would depend on how long you expect to keep the phone? If you think you'll replace it in the next two years, then just get the cheap battery. If you think you want to keep it longer, get the official Apple battery.

It also depends on how much you want to get for selling it. If you get a third party battery, it may affect its resale value (negatively) compared to getting an official Apple one.

I tend to keep my phones until Apple stops updating the iOS for the relevant model. So basically until they are obsolete - resale value not an issue.
