Deposit deduction for cleaning new oven. Place unclean on arrival

I have some quite specific points that I’m arguing with our letting agent about.
When we moved into our (privately renter) flat it was really dirty despite the fact we’d requested a professional clean in our offer. I’m talking hair shavings on the floor, cat hair, bits of food in the fridge, greasy oven etc. We complained and sent pictures. It also states in the check in report (carried out a week before our arrival) that the place was not clean. They apologised but didn’t do anything. Almost a year into our tenancy the oven packed in and after two months they finally agreed to replace it. On check out they agreed we wouldn’t have to pay for a professional clean because of the state we found it in. However now they’re charging us to clean the oven because the new oven negates the fact that we had a dirty oven when we moved in. I appreciate the old oven is gone but it feels a bit unfair for us to pay for cleaning just because they carried out a necessary oven replacement. We have left the whole place cleaner than we found it although admittedly we didn’t do a thorough clean of the oven. Thoughts?

The landlord provided you with a new oven that was (presumably) clean. You should leave the property with a clean oven. The rest of the property can be left in a 'dirty' condition since all parties, and the check-in inventory, appear to agree the property was dirty at tenancy start.0

Hmm ok. Do they not technically owe us a clean, including oven cleaning service because they never gave it to us and it was a condition of our offer? I don’t see why we have to bare extra costs because our oven broke. If it’s really as you say I’ll have to accept it I suppose but this definitely doesn’t seem fair to me.1

Just clean it with a pack from Home Bargains or similar, cost about £3 and a bit of effort. Well worth it to get full deposit back. Check in photo's / inventory will be superceded by new clean oven provided.
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -
