Charges for using debit card abroad?

Hi there.

I have a santander debit mastercard and I am looking to find out if I will be charged any fees for using my card in Spain.

Santanders website says that there are no charges, since I have an edge up current account. However, many other sites say that there is a visa or mastercard fee, which appears to be a separate fee from that of the bank?

Does anyone know how I can find this out because every website I visit seems to state different things?

Thanks for any advice.

If Santander can confirm they won't charge any fees then that's fine.  What you might find however is that if you, for instance, take money out from an ATM then the ATM bank can charge fees.  Best in that case to look for an Santander ATM as you're less likely to be charged.

It depends on the type of Santander account you have.
The Edge current account is fee free for goods and services - make sure you pay in Euros, the Without Conversion option.
Also fee free if taking currency from an ATM located at a Banco Santander branch.

Santander's own site would seem to be the obvious authoritative source for information about their products, specifically which other sites are you reading that give contradictory information?

The card user is charged no 'fee' by Visa or MasterCard, who set the daily exchange rate, on which a margin is often added by the card issuing bank. Where have you found different info..?

The Edge debit card is a top choice for Spain and the Canaries - the official Santander UK website advice is clear enough.
