I’m pretty sure  my log burner was 150mm clearance behind the burner. This may be different because of the inset style. We had no problems with MdF skirt because it never got hot enough down at the bottom. If it was near the top then no hope!

ThisIsWeird, I've just seen another post (elsewhere on the 'net) talking about stopping the return just shy of the corner. What's that all about? Why is it deemed more aesthetic?

Does it stem from creating a "shadow gap"?

Aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder  That's why I suggested placing the skirting on there, and having a play. You do what looks best to you
It's like the similarish alcove units I fitted here - it just looks 'right' for the 'bookcase' part to be stepped in from the face of the chimney breast by a few mm - or similarly stepped out - just not flush!
'Shadow gap'? Hmm, that's interesting - I wonder?
    Anyhoo, try it and see.
Report back if you dare :-)

To me that screams I’ve cut it too short and left it!
Unless the wall where return stops is out of plumb.

    Well...
I am assuming that paperclap is a lady of sofistikayshun and tayst. So I'm fully anticipating the preference for a wee gap.
