BA flight cancelled due to technical fault but now refuse claim saying it was weather conditions

Hi
My 18yr old son was due to fly out to Kos from LGW on a BA Euro flight on 26 Jun on his first holiday with friends. Having boarded the plane an announcement was then made that due to a technical problem with a tyre the passengers would need to disembark while the tyre was changed with an estimated delay of 1 hour. The flight was eventually cancelled with the reason given they had lost their slot. He was put on the next available BA flight 48hrs later. BA arranged accommodation and food vouchers.
Having now put a claim through to request compensation with BA for the cancelled flight the airline has refused the claim saying the flight was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Please could anyone tell me is there a way to find out officially why a flight was cancelled aside from asking in this instance BA. I’ve trawled through flight trackers etc but it only says the flight was cancelled and no reasons why. Is this in the public domain?
Any help or advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Vanessa

The knowledgeable folk on www.flyertalk.com include a few BA insiders who can look up delay codes. Try posting on the BA forum over there.
The last two weeks parts of Europe have experienced poor weather and resulting ATC flow restrictions. It is quite possible that after the small technical issue (1 hour) that weather/ATC created a longer delay which then pushed crew out of hours. The reason BA have given you is plausible for 26 June.0 -
Thank you Westin - appreciate your help and getting back to me so quickly!0
