Car hire - the requirement for a credit card

We are going to Italy later this month and would like to hire a car. I will be booking it as my husband prefers me to deal with all the admin (and I'm happy to!). My husband will be driving, not me. I read that if we sort our own cheaper insurance before we go, a credit card in the name of the driver has to be provided to the car rental company, which is fine. However, is this still the case when someone other than the driver makes/creates the booking? Basically what I'm asking is, if I were to make the booking for car hire, my husband is the driver so produces his credit card, will they accept that? Or do I need a credit card too? We only want to take out one credit card, either in my name or his name, so as to not harm both our credit scores (we currently each have a credit card but neither of those cards allow for fee-free spending abroad, so one of us will need to get a new one). Thanks

You say a credit card in the name of the driver has to be provided.  That would be your husband.
If you want to 'own' the credit card account, you could get a supplementary card for your husband - which could be used for the car rental.
Alternatively your husband can apply for the credit card account and use his own card (It would still make sense if he gets a supplementary card for you though, so that you can make purchases without your husband being present).
For foreign transactions I have a Halifax Clarity card and my partner has a supplementary card on my account.

Dont chance it, either put everything in one name or get a supplemental card for the other person... hire car companies are well known for using any excuse to argue you need to buy their CDW so dont give them any

I can't see why using both cards would harm your credit scores, particularly if you pay them off in full.

Regardless of that, you really need to have the policy in his name using his card.

Why not do the admin but put the booking in your husbands name?
