I passed ‘peak purse’ about a decade ago, the current one is more the size I would have had as a teenager, because nowadays loyalty cards are on my phone, and that’s also set up for contactless travel.
However I don’t find phone contactless is 100% reliable and a purse is still useful for a credit card, actual cash (welcomed by cafes and farm shops) and receipts.Fashion on the Ration

Language is a complicated, interesting thing.
My grandfather always carried a 'purse.' It was a leather affair, which had a fold at the top, a semi-circular bottom with a small tab to pull the two halves apart. That gave you a little tray to hold the coins as you shook them out. There was a small flap in front to hold carefully folded notes.
I carry a wallet, which is effectively a folded piece of leather, with two slots for notes and several smaller slots for cards.
For me the words aren't gendered, a purse is primarily for carrying coins, but may have some capacity to carry notes. A wallet is primarily for carrying notes, but may have limited space to accommodate coins.
I always carry my wallet. I'd feel naked without it. At times I've had so many cards in it that it sets off security alarms in shops and I have to demonstrate it is my wallet triggering the alarm and not something I have stolen. It used to have a lot of cash, but now has very little, which can sit there for months.
I've been receiving adverts online for handmade leather wallets from a guy called orraman on the west coast somewhere. I'm very tempted by them, but have held back so far because I'm not sure how many cards they would hold. I can't remember where my current wallet came from, but it must be at least a decade old, if not more than one.1 -
No, I carry a purse - it doesn't hold a lot of cash, but it does have a lot of important cards - driving licence, NT card, English Heritage card, Medic Alert card, bus pass and a separate pocket of coins for parking. I usually pay by card,(in a separate wallet) but there are situations where you need cash - charity collecting tins, local club subs, local fetes, car boots ets. Also, I try and use cash in smaller shops and cafes. They appreciate the change.
I don't pay by phone as I don't like having everything on one device. My battery only lasts a day anyway, and where I live there are still mobile black spots.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

I carry a purse with cash and have no intention of stopping. When I told a young charity worker that "I only paid by cash". There reply was "I must be from the 1950's!" Not quite!
I want to pay mostly by cash. But, I've finally setup my phone so that If I have an emergency I can pay by Apple Pay.

I still use a wallet (the folding type) as I have used for 50+ years. Now that I look, there doesn't seem to be as much in it as there used to be. 3 payment cards, driving licence, bus pass, couple of notes, some loose change. I don't really use cash but then I don't use my phone for payments.0

I prefer to use cash or contactless. Some people prefer to be paid in cash, so I carry some in my purse along with pound coins for trolleys. (tried the charity tokens for this but always lose them). My husband pays with phone and this is infuriating in car parks as it takes MUCH longer than simply inserting cash and drives me nuts. I have a few loyalty cards on phone -lidl, asda rewards. No plans on changing any time soon.0

DullGreyGuy said:We still get plenty who are British who've adopted US spellings etc hence mention by others of driving license rather than licenceIf I press ‘li’ on my iPhone I am offered ‘like’ or ‘license’.
if I press ‘lic’ I am offered ‘license’ or ‘lick’ at first and only if I persist will the spelling suggestions offer ‘licence’. But with no hint of which is which, other than the American spelling always comes first despite two years of my owning the iPhone. Those who find spelling a challenge or ‘frankly aren’t bothered’ will choose the easy option. Those of us blessed with photographic memories combined with a strong sense of rebelliousness - against ‘them’ seeking to drown out our language - will continue to resist. In the scheme of things I probably waste a fair amount of time insisting on linguistic correctness from a machine.

I refuse to use a phone to pay because I use different cards for different things, depending on offers / cashback / spend thresholds to reach etc. Being able to see and touch the physical card stops me getting confused.
I have used a phone when there were offers / significant additional cashback for doing so, but I remove the relevant card immediately after meeting the requirements for the offer0 -
I still carry a wallet, a £20 note is a wonderful thing, always handy to have one.
Just as one example, going back a good few years now, car broke down and was recovered, friend I was travelling with lived half an hour before me on the motorway so we asked the recovery driver if he could take a 2min detour off the motorway to drop my friend at a petrol garage so they could walk home from there.
The lorry is tracked, they know where I am, not allowed to take any detours was the answer.
One £20 note later and my friend was dropped off at the petrol station.
