Car now has a new key & was back at home later the same day (just waiting now to see if the supermarket really did put the reg on an exclusion list...). Cost was £222 (£185 + VAT)
@Bigwheels1111 - have RAC cover but not key cover - I shall treat this as having used up the saving of not buying that cover & ultimately not being out of pocket! (IFSWIM!)
ETA - the car intermittently had a problem with the alarm going off for no reason (hadn't done it for a while & believe the root cause was identified & sorted) so decided not to use the emergency key & bring it back home, just in case that set the alarm off & then couldn't stop it (probably worrying over nothing)1
