Good morning from a newbie!
I have bought all my cars from Arnold Clark in various places on the west coast of Scotland but always transferred my private plate so I don’t know the original registration. That’s the first problem. The second one is that all my documents were destroyed in a house fire in 2019. It seems like a huge task to find the agreement numbers but if anyone has had success asking their bank for help that would be good to know as that’s where I would probably start. Thank you and I appreciate any advice at all.

Wait until the FCA have completed their review. This will solve the following things:
a) is there even an issue to begin with. If so, who is effective by it (not all forms of DCA are bad - some was positive)
b) what firms need to do in the areas that have issues. This could include them being told to proactively deal with cases rather than reactively. i.e. you wont need to do anything. They will be told to review all cases without you needing to contact them.
c) what needs to be done with archived data that is no longer on their systems. The FCA has already reported that it is having difficulty getting data from firms that have archived or destroyed it. So, it is something that they are already looking at. A later FCA consultation on PPI resulted in firms bringing back archived data onto their systems which wasn't available prior to that.
So, basically, hold fire for the moment and monitor the situation. There is nothing gained for putting in your complaint at this time as the process is suspended pending the FCA report. Once the report is out, you will know what needs to be done and what the firms need to do.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
