Am I able to get a refund?

Hi there! I'm hoping I can get some wise experienced advise from anyone in the know!
Whilst on our holiday we decided to have our dated bathroom stripped and updated. The guy is a friend of my husband's and recommended the place to buy everything from as he has an account and offered his discount.
Off we went in excitement to finally have the bathroom we wanted ... dealt with a 'designer' and paid for everything to be delivered in time for our fitting date. To help the plumber we unpacked as much as we could and got rid of the cardboard packaging as it was a lot due to the nature of the project.
Our problem lies with the toilet and shower we chose wasn't compatible with our needs but the shop assistant didn't ask specific questions which resulted in the wrong items being supplied:

a) we weren't asked if the shower was either electric or plumbed in ( apparently this is very important)

b)we weren't asked if our choice of wall mounted toilet was compatible to our situation

When our lovely plumber highlighted these problems we contacted the shop who categorically said because we'd got rid of the original boxes there's no refund available. The toilet still has plastic strapping around it. The shower is still in its beautiful velvet bags. Does anyone have any advice or similar experience they can share as I'm not happy to be fobbed off with their excuses when they failed to ask questions that would have avoided this.
Hopefully someone can enlighten me and I really appreciate any response

    Hello OP

Sadly no right of return for in store beyond any policy they have.

Ordering through your friend's account for the discount muddies the waters somewhat.

At best you'd be looking at a misleading omission giving the right to unwind the contract but as it was all verbal, the waters are muddy and that legislation is non-specific I think you are going to have a hard time.

Will your friend not buy the loo and/or shower at a bit of a discount to fit for a customer he may have in the future?

I am afraid we'll need more information. Who is "The Guy" is it a bathroom fitter, plumber etc?
Where did you buy the toilet and shower.

What do you mean by "isn't compatible with our situation"?

Did they actually supply the wrong items or did they supply what you asked for?

Have you asked the shop about the designers duty of care to you as a customer?
Have you got anything in writing from the designer about their design?
