What to do with TV with damaged screen?

Hi there.

I have a 55" Hisense TV that has suddenly developed a single vertical line (green) right down the center (just a single pixel wide).

It it is not really noticeable until someone points it out (I wish I hadn't mentioned it to my family now) but we are all aware of it, now.

Luckily, I bought the TV from Richer Sounds and it is still within the 6-year guarantee (TV is 5.5 years old).

They have offered me store credit against a new TV.

They have, however, confirmed that I am free to keep the existing TV and do what I want with it.

I was originally thinking of using it as a spare but I simply do not have any other rooms that can take a TV of that size.

It seems a real shame to simply throw out the TV in the circumstances.

1. Is it worth trying to sell the whole thing on e-bay, as broken?
2. Is it worth dismantling the TV and selling the individual parts (remote, stand, boards etc.) on e-bay instead?  The screen, itself, has failed but all the other parts are working fine (and are not cheap, used, from what I have seen).

Personally I'd sell it as described as the money you'd get is free money having been recompensed by RS. As long as you mention the line down the middle, shouldn't be too problematic. I would have thought a dismantled TV would be a lot more hassle and a smaller customer pool, but I haven't really looked into second hand TV parts. You could see if any community groups need a TV and give it away.

    As BigPhil says.
Also try Fb Marketplace - often less hassle.
Take good photos showing a hi-def picture from a normal viewing distance to indicate it ain't usually visible, then closer ones to show when the line can be seen.
Yes, you could strip it down, and chances are you'd get more for it overall, but - wow - what a palaver. And you'll still have parts not selling in 5 year's time.

Vertical green lines can be a fault of your input cable. Try a new/different HDMI lead and see if it persists. Hopefully that's all it is

Nobody fixes anything anymore so parts are unlikely to sell and probably sit around forever. If you do sell, spares and repairs with an honest description

OR as you are going to get a new tv you could always give it away  free on FB marketplace or similar ,its not like it owes you any thing.

Assuming you're happy to "take a risk" as youve allready got a replacmenet lined up, sometimes a good "whack" with something "soft but hard" like a wooden batton can fix single lines of dodgy pixels, it can also utterly ruin the whole thing.

Thanks everyone - really helpful comments.

Unfortunately, given the TV's age, Richer Sounds were only able to offer me a % of the TV's original value  (£230.00) towards a TV so I am going to have to spend at least the same again to get a replacement.

Anything I could get from the old TV would be really useful at the moment - I wasn't really budgeting for a new TV at the moment and expected this one to last longer than it has.

    Thanks again.

Yes, the famous Richer Sounds 6 year guarantee isn't as good as lots of people assume.

Agreed - I am locked into buying again from Richer Sounds, which is pretty clever on their part.  They do price match but I have suddenly realised that I have a limited choice of TVs to choose from, now - though some might say that they only stock decent models to begin with.

Sell it on Facebook marketplace with a full description of what's wrong and allow sellers to look at it in the flesh before paying.

It's not, but they are at least a good company with decent service.
