How did he pay for previous insurance?

If monthly there may be a credit agreement visible on his credit file.
It would be monthly - how can he see his credit file? That's worth a try ty :)

Register with Clearscore or Credit Karma (or both).

May have to recall details of previous credit agreements to pass security which may be an issue?

If he goes online via a PC or laptop, goes to Yahoo, does the forgotten password protocol and gets back into his yahoo account, he might find old emails still there (along with the no doubt hundreds of junk mail emails he's had since then). He might even have reminder emails from the company he used before. Don't think it works the same if you go through the app on a phone though, so no need to go through a PC of some sort.

How did he pay? If it was by DD or in one lump sum, it will be on a statement somewhere - find old statements or access the online account and search back. He must have some idea when it was last purchased. Shouldn't be hard.

Has it been uninsured for the year or is it still insured?

If it's currently insured, then looking it up on https://enquiry.navigate.mib.org.uk/checkyourvehicle might tell you.

There is a way to check at a specific date - only intended for checking other vehicles involved in an accident of course
