There are a few unions normally realted to one (former) employer where Regional / National Office staff are seconded ( i.e. 100 % Facility time) and physical facilities are provided by one of the employers (i.e. whoever manages the site the facility is at) but these are the exception rather than the rule.
Occasionally you find employers offering facility time for the union to support everyone during mass consultations or if a H+S issue is being raised as they ffind it;s cheaper ( just throw some more hours in the facility time pot) and more straightforward ( as Reps know how to keep a consultation 1to 1 on track vs random accompanying colleagues )
In a previous role we have some staff transfer from another site whic wasn;t unionised and the time and effort that had to be spent in unknotting the promises they had been given by the previous site and what the recieving site had been told by HQ was extensive0 -
I've come late to this party so maybe I'm missing something despite reading the entire saga. How is an iPod related to the purchase of a cheap phone. I know smartphones have the function to play music etc, but wasn't aware that an iPod could send and receive phone calls. Irrespective of that, many employers ban the use of personal phones and devices to listen to music etc during working hours. The ban on listening to music may be on safety ground as hearing is diminished when buds are in the ears, or simply because managers don't like having to shout at staff to get their attention. Both valid grounds in my opinion. My nephew has just started a job where personal electronic devices of any kind are banned. They must be left in a locker in a secure area before entering the main buildings. I wonder how some would cope with that. My nephew loves it as he can simply get on with his job without interruption.2
