And my only worry is reporting to head office could cause more issues? Perhaps they give me a hard time
But why would you be reporting to Head Office ? Because you’re told to leave your phone in a locker ? Or because you’re going to challenge re the iPod exclusion ? Or some other spurious reason ?
I reported I that they asked staff to tackle a shop lifted and my rota changed (changed back after I called HR so maybe that’s ok for now) and I mentioned an iPod but I would phoned work to say I will take this £30 pounds phone for the locker. Not sure if that would stop them getting on my back. There is a union £10 pounds per month or sure how effective they are.
Most unions (rightly) won't help with an issue that's already arisen before you become a member.

Nevertheless, OP should join the union so that support and representation is available next time it's needed.

Bonkers not having your own insurance on a £1000 device anyway.
Should be covered under home contents insurance
Huge fuss by OP over something trivial. Don't leave a £1,000 phone in a locker - get a cheap one (well under £100 for a perfectly good smartphone) and use that on working days. Only takes a moment to switch your SIM.
Great idea that’s the solution I am going with. I seen one at Argos £30 quid still goes on facebook? Only thing is may be on my back as I reported it to HR?
I think the idea is this is a phone you can keep in your locker while at work without stressing too much about theft. I don't think anyone is suggesting you wear it on your back, or any other part of your body.
So a £30 pound phone in a locker solves all the issues then as if can’t an expensive phone stolen?
It is probably less likely to be stolen as it is unlikely someone would see you put it in a locker and then break in once you had gone. Also if someone did break into a random locker and find it they might think twice before taking it, depending on what they were after. You could also minimise the risk of loss by not having financial stuff on it, or anything which could be user by scammers. Of course the downside is that your expensive phone would be at home, do you have a safe?

agree - just to add most (all?) unions also charge a fee for membership. ( as the OP seems a bit "surprised" at having to pay)

Yes the monthly cost depends on how much you earn. Worth every penny IMO.

    it's most Unions,

There are a few unions  normally  realted to one  (former)  employer where Regional / National Office staff are seconded  ( i.e. 100 % Facility time) and  physical facilities are provided by one of the employers (i.e. whoever manages the site the facility is at)  but these are the exception rather than the rule.

Occasionally  you  find  employers offering facility time for the union to support everyone  during  mass consultations or   if a H+S  issue is being raised as they  ffind it;s cheaper ( just throw some more hours in the facility time pot)   and  more straightforward ( as Reps  know  how to  keep a consultation 1to 1 on track vs  random  accompanying colleagues )

In a previous role we have some staff transfer from another site whic wasn;t unionised and the time  and effort that had to be spent in unknotting  the promises they had been given by the previous site and what  the   recieving site had been told by HQ   was  extensive

I've come late to this party so maybe I'm missing something despite reading the entire saga.  How is an iPod related to the purchase of a cheap phone.  I know smartphones have the function to play music etc, but wasn't aware that an iPod could send and receive phone calls.  Irrespective of that, many employers ban the use of personal phones and devices to listen to music etc during working hours.  The ban on listening to music may be on safety ground as hearing is diminished when buds are in the ears, or simply because managers don't like having to shout at staff to get their attention.  Both valid grounds in my opinion.
My nephew has just started a job where personal electronic devices of any kind are banned.  They must be left in a locker in a secure area before entering the main buildings.  I wonder how some would cope with that.  My nephew loves it as he can simply get on with his job without interruption.

WhatsApp/Messenger. So, not phone calls, per se, but equivalent.

The store said no to iPods but the company never so it’s complicated. Someone here suggested I take a cheap spare phone that way if it’s stolen or lost it’s less of a deal. No banking or personal photos on it as I had my last phone stolen. I am due in on Friday so I will see how it goes
