Family member using debit card for X box and won't cancel - advice.

I think this is bigger than a "cancel the card" scenario. My advice would be for MiL to get a new bank account with a completely separate bank (Santander, Barclays just not in the same banking group). And don't do this by "switch". If she does a switch all the DDs and CPAs will follow to the new account and she'll be not much further forward. By going for something completely new BiL will have no idea who she's banking with and have no access so the theft (yes theft) will stop. Be prepared for more tantrums.
Also I assume that you have PoA set up for MiL? If not at least get the new account set up with third party authority so you can help her keep a closer eye on things.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. CPAs and anything else linked to your debit card details won't follow you when you switch using CASS. Only DDs and SOs will.Brie said:I think this is bigger than a "cancel the card" scenario. But I agree that the easiest way forward would be for MIL to contact the bank and explicitly revoke access for the CPA, and then get a new debit card issued for good measure.

I suggest you google Visa Account Updater.Emmia said:Just report the card as lost or broken, and have Halifax issue a new one. If your MiL is ok to write off the Xbox expenses then I'd just get the card cancelled. No need to file / produce a police report
You advice is wrong & causes no end of complaints, where people think it will stop the payments. If I had a £ for every customer that says that I would not need to work.Life in the slow lane3 -
this is fairly straightforward
1. contact the bank and ask them to stop the CPA. They must do this if requested.
2. report the old card lost or stolen and get a new one. yes visa updater will transfer any current subscriptions across but any new spending will be blocked.0 -
I bow to your superior knowledge. Perhaps the MiL should avoid giving her bank details out to avoid this type of issue in future.born_again said:

You can cancel card subscriptions in the app, so Halifax should be able to do the same if she phones them:As mentioned it would probably be a good idea to cancel the card too so he won't be able to use it for anything else. I'd also keep a very close eye on the account and look back carefully to see where all the money has gone. If she has been paying a subscription for two years without noticing then who knows else might have been taken.

The whole point of VAU is to transfer these payments to the new card. 🤦♀️Olinda99 said:this is fairly straightforward

It works by retailer being advised that the card has been stopped, they then request the new card details & then update their system with the new card details
The only way to stop them is as other have said contact the bank & get a stop on future payments. No need to stop & replace card at all.Life in the slow lane0 -
The recommendation to replace the card was mostly to stop the grandson from using the card details again if he had written them down somewhere. But otherwise you're correct in saying that telling the bank to cancel the payments should end the CPA.born_again said:

No mention of any other usage other than X-Box though.PRAISETHESUN said:
