If the accommodation sleeps 5 and there are 5 adults, where is the 3 year old child going to sleep?1

For me it would depend on when the decision by the brother was made ..
If it was a case of, no not coming ... then after payment .. Oh I think I will ..
Or if you booked/paid and the brother wasn't aware/understood Β and asked to come ..
I know my brother waits until after an event like that is all sorted and paid then decides he would like to come along with his whole entourage .. Β1 -
The 3 Yr old can sleep with us in our room on a travel bed

Should have clarified, the balance isn't due yet and will be paid next week. Holiday is in 6 weeks0

So he hasnβt offered any payment ? That would really bother me, does he have a history of not paying his share ?ΒYes I think he should pay his share, Iβm assuming he will be taking the room you had originally intended for your child, meaning you now have less space and less privacy.
Honestly I donβt think you should even have to ask, he should have offered to pay when he asked to join you.3 -
Fine if he doesn't pay for the accommodation but he should be paying a mighty big portion of other expenses.Β Maybe petrol if he's not driving separately, take everyone out, buy in food and drink if it's self catering.Β These things get more expensive with an extra person whereas the cottage costs whatever it costs if it's 1 or 10.Β ΒIβm a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.Β If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. does it say sleeps 5 (as per your OP) or sleeps 5 adults
If the former, as above, you already have 5 without him3 -

What's BIL's situation eg is he a 17yo at sixth form and only a w/end job as income or an adult working f-time?Β Β1

For clarification, are the parents paying a share? π€ I wondered whether the BIL might think you'd rented for your own family originally and had space for his parents and so perhaps him as well. So, a bit like inviting them to stay in your home.Β0
