Self-indulgent car
Options
I've an electric car on a lease which is due to go back soon. We cannot get a home charger and we're dependent on public charging.
My wife is completely fed-up of it, particularly having to charge it, and is happy to give me pretty much a free choice as long as it isn't electric.
I don't like really small cars and do not want an SUV.
An estate would be good. A hatch would also work as long as there is room for a dog in the boot.
Any suggestions of where I would get most bang for my buck at £8-10k?

So your self indulgence is simply it's a hatch or estate?
How are you defining "bang for buck"? Best performance? MPG? Cheap repairs?1 -
Skoda Octavia or Superb estate depending on the size you need.3

S4 Avant. 535/40 Touring.1

Ford Focus....plenty of choice.1

Octavia VRS hatch or estate loads of room, look smart, nice interior, easy to look after.

This is MSE after all!
I find it hard to be self-indulgent. Whatever the reason for buying something there are always compelling reasons to keep a hold of the money instead. Just getting a second vehicle is self-indulgent in itself.
I've considered a jag XF, but at that price they will have starship miles. It wouldn't be cheap to maintain either. I'd like to say MPG doesn't matter, but equally I don't want to throw money away on that.
Not massively concerned about performance. Capable if pushed, but not outright sporty. Comfortable - android auto - climate - quiet. Pleasant to drive.0 -
Properly indulgent= Chrysler 300c V8 Hemi
Not so indulgent = Honda Accord1 -
Thought you were replacing a car not getting an additional one?
Its swings and roundabouts... a chap at our local was always self employed, did ok but never saved or paid into a pension, he's gone from 6 days a week in the pub to once a week now he's retired as he cannot afford it. A family friend, no kids, did very well for himself but lived very frugally; retired at 60, at 63 diagnosed with cancer and died on his 65 birthday leaving a vast sum to charities. Not sure which is the right one; somewhere between the two myself.
Not a fan of "luxury" estates, feels a bit of an oxymoron to me, sure I'll get attacked for that! Would look at what you can get with a Skoda Octavia1 -

We've another vehicle which is our main one. The electric car was a toy / commuter. It is going. I retired and went back to work part-time, usually just one day a week, so I could use our van and leave my wife without transport on that day. She doesn't see the need for a second vehicle. I want one however, and I've seen some cracking lease deals on new electric cars. She would agree to just about anything to get away from electric.
The best car I've ever had was an Audi CD avant, with a 5 cylinder engine. Golf GTI level acceleration, a higher top speed, and an effortless motorway cruiser. So I'm kind of sold on the luxury estate, but I don't want the associated maintenance costs.
Octavia / Superb is looking best compromise at this point.0 -
Why can't you get a home charger?0
