I think you can plug your phone into the router.

So it's just the POTS service going, not landlines altogether.

That said, I ditched my landline as it only seemed to be there for the convenience of cold callers and scammers.

It's the gizmo you plug into phone master socket to get your internet into your house.

Yes, it's a serious question.  I know that the OH's pc is plugged into something but not a phone socket and that's what gets us internet.  The only phone socket I'm aware of is in the lounge which is the other side of the house and that's just got the phone plugged in.  Guess I'll have to sneak a peak at all the electrics to see if I can figure it out. 

Wouldn't it be more sensible to call it an internet plug?

Other routers & modems will be similar, although some may need a small adaptor (Virgin modems do).

No, because it is a router.  "Router" is a specific term that covers more network devices that those used in domestic broadband.  Devices that route packets of data between multiple connections, in this case between your ISP on one side and your home devices (computers, phones on wifi, tablets on wifi, smart TVs etc etc etc) on the other.  They can't all share the connection without a router to aggregate all their communication and pass it on, then distribute the replies to the correct device.

The thing the PC is plugged into will have another connection going.  That may be the master phone socket in a traditional phoneline setup, or it might be something specific to the provider, like VM use coax cable.
